Today the group finalized the keynote for the presentation tomorrow. Since our group still had more action research to finish we finished that off. While we were doing that Harry finished his movie for the keynote. He said that he was going to work on the voiceovers. The rest of us worked on our keynote and we made our script for the presentation. The interviews I did on Thursday weren’t very effective because we thought the people lied. So we decided to email the people we interviewed and asked them why they didn’t recycle and so on. Our plan for next period is to practice and rehearse our presentation for Tuesday.
Today we only had one block to work on our water project. Megan, Christine, Aubrey and Harry worked on the videos and voiceovers. Chris worked on graphing the data. He made a pie chart and a graph. While the rest of the group was doing their work, I was interviewing girls and boys from every grade level of the Middle/High school. I found out that people buy plastic items from Shamrock a lot and that people think that recycling is important. For the grade nines, we interviewed Jorge and Anna and they agreed on almost all of the answers maybe it was because they are boyfriend and girlfriend. The grade ten representatives, Wakako and Suhail didn’t know that there was plastic recycling bottles in classrooms and Suhail had a really good idea of having compost bins in the lunchroom. For the first half of today, Megan and Aubrey counted all of the water bottles and Harry finally brought his camera and tripod to video tape the trashcans at lunchtime. According to the videos, 1 out of 17 people recycled and the one person was Christian in a different video! We were shocked when we found out because so many people in our survey said that they did recycle. They must’ve lied. After lunch, Ms. Thorne talked to us about what we’ve done and we decided with her that we would each interview two people (1 boy and 1 girl) from each grade level. Aubrey is doing the grade sixes, Christine is doing the grade sevens, Megan is going to interview two grade eights, I am doing the grade nines, Chris is interviewing the grade tens and Harry is interviewing the grade elevens. Here is one of the videos Harry took during lunchtime.
For the first half of today, our group went through the weebly site and gave constructive criticism to our reporters and Harry and I. Also, Harry told us all about what he found out while he was researching yesterday about reducing, reusing a recycling. He also started constructing the keynote. During the second half of the day, Christine and Megan continued their action research. They went to every classroom to count how many plastic items they found in the recycling bins. While they were doing that, I was taking pictures (below) of our group while they were working.
Today our group started the action research. First we came up with questions and then we put them in the survey. Then Aubrey and Megan wrote out an email to all of the HKA Staff. However, before Ms. Thorne checked it Raj told us to put his questions on our survey so we had to do that. After finishing up the survey, we came up with questions for the Primary School teachers about recycling in the Primary School and we went to interview them. We learned that they empty the recycling bins once a week and if they forgot their bottles then they would have to use a paper cup. Finally, Harry took some notes on basic recycling. T Today we gathered Information about the Community Need. In this we basically came up with questions for the interviews with Mr. Musco and Mrs. Anna Wong and we came up with questions for Shamrock, the surveys and the cleaners. We also decided when we would start the survey and we started the survey. Today our group finished our Service Plan. In this we had to make a commitment to our group members and the teachers about what we were going to to do. Basically, we had to write about our plan. I feel that our team wasted a lot of time working on the Service Plan. When we finished filling out the Service Plan, we all signed it. Today our group worked finished our plan and then we started our Service Plan. On the plan we had to think about what we were actually going to do. We decided we were going to interview Mr. Musco and various other staff members, such as Mrs. Anna Wong. We were also going to make a survey for all of the Middle High school students and teachers and Christine and Harry were going to go around the Middle/High school and take pictures of the trash cans. Today my group Chris, Aubrey and I got together to brainstorm the ‘Task Definition’ for our project. In this we reviewed our assessment, brainstormed questions for the overall project, came up with we were going to do, came up with a purpose statement, key words and etc. Overall our group worked collaboratively together. Here is an embedded document of our first step of the project, Task Definition. |
