Today we worked on putting the slideshow together. Some of us looked through the rubric and made sure we had done everything. We noticed we did not research how our topic relates to science, so a few of us worked on that. We have only have a couple of days to work on it and it is getting stressful.
Today we worked on finding more information about general plastic recycling in Hong Kong and also the recovery of plastic in Hong Kong. We also started our overall presentation. Today and Thursday we will be continue working on our presentation. Next monday we will go on our last field trip to an environmentally friendly group who we can interview for more information.
Here are some pictures that were taken from someone's apartment: This is an About.Com post which talks about the benefits and drawbacks of recycling in large cities, such as New York, Chicago etc. It mainly describes the problems city councils have faced when implementing recycling services and facilities in their cities, especially the cost of doing so. Things such as the recycling bins that have to be placed around the city’s area to the regular disposal pick-ups all cost, from US$50-200, twice as much as normal disposal. These prices can also lead cities into financial trouble, New York City is a particular example. The cost of placing the landfills, the sanitation trucks, all of equipment and necessities needed for their city recycling plan was too much for their budget. As a result, they were forced to scale down their recycling program, resulting in all of their landfills filling up and forced to close, which in turn, made the recycling program useless. Also, this link is part of the “Earth Talk” Q&A Blog, a section of About.Com that takes in questions people have on the environment, so if you have questions on the environment in your mind, feel free to email them to the Earth Talk blog!
Link: http://environment.about.com/od/recycling/a/benefit_vs_cost.htm This article is about recycling in Hong Kong, and how it works in some places. It’s about some cleaners that work in housing estates. They look for recyclable materials and sell them to recycle companies for extra money. These cleaners can earn around HK$300 a month, when one plastic bottle is worth 10 cents and one kilogram of paper is 80 cents. That tells you just how much Hong Kong recycles! Although we didn’t interview, some of us looked at where we can go next week. Others worked on the website and took notes. We also made questions that we can ask if we interview someone. Next week we are going to visit friends of the earth and start putting our slideshow together.
This is a link to an interesting website that lists the main misconceptions people have about recycling plastics. For example, the plastic recycling logo and number you find on a plastic container is assumed by many people that it is recyclable and that they are helping the environment, but in truth, that is not always the case. The number on the bottle or container is actually meant to identify the type of plastic material used to make the bottle, not to identify whether a plastic bottle is recyclable or not. There are also other examples of these misconceptions people have on plastic recycling, such as assuming that anything plastic in the recycle bin gets recycled to the myth that we only have two choices when it comes to throwing away our waste, recycling or putting it in a landfill. http://www.ecologycenter.org/ptf/misconceptions.html
There are two types of recycling; close-loop recycling and open-loop recycling. Close-loop recycling happens when recycled materials are recycled and made into different products over and over again. Open-loop recycling happens when a product can only be recycled once, then thrown away.
When using plastic, you can check the plastic if whether or not the plastic you might be purchasing can be recycled or not.
Today we worked in class. We worked on research, our blog and fixing pictures. In the morning, some of us worked on putting the blog together. We added our day reflections and added slideshows with pictures from Kennedy town. Some of us worked on editing the photos and putting them in a slideshow. After lunch we continue working on the blog and research. Mina and Sammi went to the library to see if there was any books on plastic recycling. We found one useful book.
